US SAILING's 2009 Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship

March 11, 2008 Press Release
US SAILING’s Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Championship Returns to Houston Yacht Club in 2009
La Porte, Texas, USA (March 11, 2008) – Organizers of US SAILING’s Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Championship – the first world sailing competition created for women – have announced the dates for the next running of this biennial event. Houston Yacht Club (HYC) in La Porte, Texas will once again host the regatta, scheduled for October 14-17, 2009. As part of US SAILING’s Championship calendar, the event’s mission is to provide women sailors of all ability levels with high-quality racing and an opportunity to compete against top national and international sailors, while providing skills development through nationwide Road to Rolex clinics and mentoring to young women through the Next Step to Rolex program and the Junior Road to Rolex clinic. The current champion, Sally Barkow (Nashotah, Wis.), recently received US SAILING’s highest honor as the 2007 Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year based in part on her accomplishment of winning the Rolex IWKC a third straight time.

The Regatta

The Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Championship is one of the world’s premier sailing events. The four day fleet racing regatta will be sailed on International J/22 class keelboats on race courses designed to maximize world-class competitive conditions.

Since 1985, the regatta has provided women keelboat sailors the highest quality racing. It was the catalyst for the first-ever women’s event in the 1988 Olympics. The competitors have included world champion title-holders and past Olympic sailors as well as dedicated women sailors from around the world.

Known for a spirit of camaraderie off the water, the Rolex IWKC features daily socials and culminates with the Rolex Trophy Ceremony, where US Sailing's Bengt Julin trophy is awarded to the winning team.

Houston Yacht Club

As host to the event in both 2007 and 2009, Houston Yacht Club continues its strong tradition of supporting women’s sailing and providing world class race and regatta management.

National and International events hosted by HYC include: The U.S. Women's Championship for the Adams Cup, the Tornado World Championships, U.S. Junior Women's Championships, and the 470 Class 2004 Olympic Trials.

Houston Yacht Club has twice been awarded the prestigious St. Petersburg Trophy emblematic of excellence in race management. The high quality of HYC’s race management team, beautiful club house and facilities, and community of volunteers give sailors a unique experience when racing on Galveston Bay.
